We’re pleased to introduce the first ever Karina signature suit!

Born and raised in Southern California, Karina Rozunko’s summer playground was SanO, a beach time capsule of longboarding and retro surf culture. In this parking lot of vintage cars, analog stereos, and old school logs dominating the line-up, it’s no wonder that Karina’s style is heavily influenced by the past.

For her eponymous one-piece, Karina co-designed the high neck and hourglass silhouette to complement her classic noseriding style that looks like as smooth and timeless as a film photograph. She makes hanging all ten digits look easy, but her athleticism, talent and dedication that make up her graceful style constantly amaze us.

We caught up with Karina Rozunko before she headed out to Oz to talk more about her signature suit, and the surf trips that changed her life.

Stay tuned for more stories about our Seeababe signature suits co-designed with our ambassadors.

Photos by Dylan Gordon.

Let’s talk about your first signature suit! What did you want in a suit and why?

I wanted a one-piece that reflected the 1950s combining fashion and function. I was inspired one of Claire McCardel's designs from the 1940's—a very stunning piece.

[Designer] Amanda [Chinchelli] and I worked on this design pretty quick. I had a pretty specific idea of what I wanted. High neck, open back, and a different leg/thigh cut. Getting the "Karina" perfect with all the bells and whistles took some adjustment considering the unique leg cut and stitch. It was really interesting seeing the process and attention to detail all these suits have. It was really fun to work with Amanda on this and getting to see the finished product.

“The Karina” is a suit that you feel very comfortable in and that's really important to me in all aspects of life. Being comfortable is a really important factor in surfing. If you feel like you look good you’re going to surf well.

You used to do gymnastics before you started surfing. How did you get into gymnastics?

I remember watching the Olympics in 2004 and thinking I wanted to do that. That week my mom signed me up for classes because I wouldn't stop bugging her and trust me, it was all I thought about. I would get home and be walking around on my hands in my living room and asking my family what dance moves looked better. "This one, or this one?" To them it all looked the same. I eventually had to quit because of all my injuries from the sport.

I did my first Roxy Wahine classic at SanO when I was 10 and then surfing was my thing. But before I could walk my dad would take me out on his back at SanO and we would get the biggest sets!

What were your favorite types of routines to do in gymnastics, and how does that awareness of your body relate to your surfing?

I really loved floor and beam. It was a combination of flips and dance. I somehow still know all my routines and if Makala [Smith] or Lola [Mignot] convinces me I will do it on the beach. Muscle memory is crazy and it totally relates to surfing. I just start going and not even realizing what I'm doing. A lot of people will tell me, "Wow that was really nice what you did on that wave," and honestly I won't even remember what I did on that wave. It just happens.

Tell us more about what you’ve been reading and listening to while traveling. What are you into now?

In Costa Rica I was reading the autobiography "M Train" by Patti Smith and Also "Just Kids." I originally picked up Patti Smith's book because her music and poetry really intrigued me. I guess I find this time period enchanting because it was a time of originality. A lot of the people that inspire me lived during those times. We were listening to a lot of Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde album. It fit the mood.

What’s the last trip you went on that opened your eyes or really changed your life and why?

All my trips lately have been super amazing but a trip that has really opened my eyes was when I stayed in Australia for three months. It was a huge turning point in my life. Being totally on my own for the first time experiencing complete freedom. I bought a van and met so many beautiful people and surfing in regular foot heaven.

Just to be in a different environment and to be around new people was really refreshing. Also not having obligations and to be free to surf some of the best waves of my life was pretty good. Australia is pretty charming.

You're planning on taking a lot of photos and video on your next trip to Australia. What kinds of moments are you looking to capture?

I love taking film photos. There is something very authentic and genuine about getting one chance to get what you're trying to create.

Its easy to forget that Australia is an island. In its isolation, a paradise flourishes with tight-knit communities that are equal parts connected the hinterlands and the ocean that surrounds them. Sound familiar Californians that spent winters in the mountains and summers on the shore?

Gather together three generations of the best surfers from around the world on one beach, and you’re guaranteed to have rare memories that stay with you forever. Only during the Noosa Festival of Surfing can you exit the bus from the airport, totally jet lagged and lost, and then find your friends by following the sounds of waves.

Only in Noosa can you surf under the night sky, and not be alone. “I would never do it at home but always seem to do it at Noosa. It just feels safe,” says Australian Seeababe Kirra Innes who lives in Yamba.

On her first trip to Australia, Seea’s resident photographer Luki O’Keefe shared how the locals made her feel welcome during her first days in Noosa.

Congrats to Seeababes Karina Rozunko for placing first in the Women’s Open and Makala Smith for placing second at the Noosa Festival of Surfing!

“The waves are the #1 best thing about Noosa the 2nd best is the community that the waves bring together.

I hopped off the plane and on to a bus that dropped me off somewhere in the middle of Noosa. I hadn't been able to connect with anyone so I just asked someone where the beach was, like the totally lost tourist I was. I walked for quite a while in clothes that were not made for the overwhelmingly hot weather, carrying a suitcase and two backpacks across town until I heard the waves crash.

I followed the sound down a trail in the woods and found Karina who led me to the van that I now call home. Over the next few days I connected with friends I hadn't seen since their visit last summer and I met heaps of new friends that offered me a home, a board, and some waves. I'm on the other side of the world but the community feels identical to the SanO surf tribe I grew up with.” -- Luki O'Keefe.

Made in collaboration with Australian filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, "Intimasea" is a short film that celebrates the beauty and grace of women's longboard surfing, and dreamy high of playing in the waves with your friends.

Featuring Seeababe ambassadors: Leah Dawson, Lola Mignot, Hallie Rohr, Karina Rozunko, Mele Saili and Makala Smith wearing the Seea 2015 collection, and filmed in Australia.

“Unfortunately, when I was a grom, there weren’t many girls and women in the water. I went through high school knowing only one girl who surfed with us,” said Nathan Oldfield in The Inertia. “Back then, lineups tended to be very macho affairs — very competitive, crowded with full-on sword fights. Nowadays, the tables have completely turned, especially where I live. I for one am completely stoked to share waves with lady sliders. They bring a unique and beautiful and gentler energy to surfing culture; it is a privilege and a pleasure and, above all, an inspiration to share time in the ocean with sea sisters.”

Being on vacation, the passing days move slow and fast in the same instant. Punctuated by the shifting tides, wind, the next meal, the sun’s place in the sky — every moment is the best moment and then evaporates in a blink by the time a week is through.

Take a peek into the lazy days of the Seeababes during their last trip to Sayulita, Mexico for the MexiLogFest. From sunrise to sunset, we lounged around Lola Mignot’s home base, cooled off in the ocean, napped on the hot sand, and reveled in watching the sunset like it was our last night on vacay.

Meet Karina! Photo by Luki O'Keefe.

A quintessential California girl, Karina Rozunko is never too far from the coast. Growing up in a surfing family in the beach town of Hamburg, she caught her first waves surfing tandem with her dad, and still remembers the rush. “He would paddle into some waves with me that felt really big!” she says.

We connected with her in the water at our local spot, San Onofre beach (which happened to be where she tried out her first Seea suit: the SanO one-piece of course), and ever since we've loved being around her happy energy in the line-up. She may have grown up surfing with guys — she names her brother Tanner Rozunko and her dad as her best teachers— but we almost always see her trading waves (in her own unique and confident style) and adventuring along PCH with her girlfriends.

We caught up with Karina to get the scoop on her traveling ways — logging time in China, Australia and Mexico — and the friends she's met along the way.

What are your favorite local spots to surf?

My favorite spot is SanO. That beach is something special. The wave is perfect and the people are like family there.

Did you grow up surfing with mostly guys or girls?

I love surfing with girls! There is more wave sharing and messing around than with guys. But, surfing with guys is great too! I think it helps my surfing to see what the guys are doing and pushes me to keep up.

When I was learning, I pretty much only surfed with guys. The [girl] friends I surf with are hands down the biggest influence on my surfing style. I feel so lucky to have a super talented group of friends that enjoy surfing together. We try new things, get creative and push each other to try new moves.

Karina Rozunko competing in the 2014 GoPro World Longboard Championships in China. Photo from World Surf League.

You've traveled to China for the World Longboard Championships in China contest a few years now. What's the surf scene like over in China?

China was amazing. This was my third year going and each year I saw more and more local surfers in the water, which was so cool! I really enjoyed seeing such a big smiles on their faces while out in the lineup. Also, it was so amazing to watch the local girls, Monica and Darci get so much better every time I see them!

What's your travel style like? Do you like to plan things out or going with the flow?

I like to make a plan and then go with the flow because usually that's where the adventure is. The only plans that I have for my trips are to see new things, meet new people, surf new waves and have a good time.

What are some of the coolest new experiences you've had while traveling?

My surf trips have exposed me to so many new things. China was a bit of a culture shock. We ate yummy cow tongue and intestine with the locals. I saved an adorable puppy from being someone's next dinner and found it a good home. In Sayulita, Mexico I made some new and amazing friends, I learned about their culture and surfed warm uncrowded breaks! I traveled down the coast of Australia, camping with five people in a two-man tent and waking up to a new surf spot every day. Yep, I've had some pretty great experiences — even remembering these gives me wanderlust!

You travel a lot while surfing, but don't have space to pack a lot. What is your advice for what you must bring if you're going on any surf trip?

A camera, music player, all my Seea suits because you can't have enough suits, oh and sunscreen is a must.

How is surfing a part of your everyday life?

Surfing is a huge part of my life, from the people I hangout with to the lifestyle I live. Surfing is my therapy and I couldn't imagine my life without it.

Thanks Karina! We are so happy to have you in the Seeababes family!
