Where and when Lola Mignot exists is an ever-evolving question mark. Like a migrating bird or sea creature, she’s rarely nested in one place longer than a season and the exact days of her arrival and departure are decided in the moment. What you can be certain of: she’s by the beach (the short list of locations are Mexico, California, and Eastern Australia, where branches of her extended family live), and that she’s creating art along the way (be it an improvised dance on her longboard or a bracelet crafted of Tahitian pearls).

Born in Paris, Lola’s toddler years were spent on her family’s sailboat whisked by the wind to Tahiti and wherever their hearts felt was right. Through their travels, her mom crafted and sold jewelry, (a skill that she’s passed on to Lola) and taught her to live freely and attuned with nature—a nomadic gypsy lifestyle akin to ‘50s-‘70s surfer rebels in pursuit of flow, counterculture to society’s expectations.

The Mignot family settled in Sayulita, Mexico, a sleepy fishing village nestled in bay abundant in coconuts and waves. It was at this right point break that Lola showed up for her daily lessons with the ocean like a ballerina at the barre; each day refining her movements and a style that’s all her own. Because art doesn’t begin and end with the finished product—a painting, a necklace, a film—it's constantly creating and evolving.

We pinned Lola down in Saladita during the MexiLogFest to talk more about her eponymous suit and where she'll get her next passport stamps.

Tell us more about your first signature suit! What did you want in a suit and why?

The Lola suit’s high cut leg—it was in a suit my mom used to wear in the ‘90s. I saw it in a photo of hers when I was picking through an old box in the corner of our studio. Since then I’ve always been inspired by the ‘80s and ‘90s, it’s funky and fun. The curved waist pattern on the suit follows the waistline of a woman's body. The suit is simple, you put it on and you will look good and feel good in and out of the water at any time. GO SURFING AND ENJOY THE LOLA SUIT!

What are some of the things that you always travel with and why?

The biggest piece and the most important, my boards of course! My multi-use sarong, high-waisted jean shorts with a little white tank top (the basics), and if I want to go and treat myself to a fancy dinner I take out my silk black dress that I stole from mama. My essential oils—niaouli, eucalyptus, and lavender—my grandma remedies that will help me get through any sickness at any time. My jewelry, leather and lose pearls so in case I run out of money I can go around and sell them, get money and travel some more. This always comes in handy. My jewelry is also a way to say 'thank you' to all the people that open their homes and take care of me while I’m traveling.

When was the first time you traveled alone?

I often travel without mama and papa, but was well accompanied by my uncles and aunts while I was little. We are one big family, a gypsy family. But the first time I traveled without family members, I was about 13 from Mexico to California and Malibu with my dear friend Karina Rozunko. Perfect waves and freedom!

Through your travels, you’ve gotten to see how a lot of other people live around the world. Does it make you appreciate how your family brought you up close to nature? Why?

Yes, I did love the way my mom and dad brought us close to nature. In fact, my first years I lived merged into nature. We were in the sailboat surrounded by water, the moon, the sun. When I grew up little by little my mom just trusted me so much— and still today. We didn't even go to school. For my mom and dad, life itself is an adventure from the day we are born to the day we die, we never stop learning. We grew up with the idea to "live what you love.”

In France we have a saying that says, "le voyage forme la jeunesse" [travel broadens the mind]... and that's what we did and keep on doing… and now having the possibility of traveling and learning from other cultures is a blessing.

What are you excited to do next?

I’m excited for it all! Life is bringing me many adventures every step I make.

But Europe is in my To-Do list at the moment. Portugal to begin with, then Spain to visit my grandparents whom I really miss. And from there I will let destiny decide for me. I will be traveling without a board, because with a board it would be hard to jump from train to train. Then I will be able to know the world without surfing for a month or two. There are very different cultures besides the sea that I want to see, and to travel on my own, meet people, and see what else there is to learn in life for me.

Its easy to forget that Australia is an island. In its isolation, a paradise flourishes with tight-knit communities that are equal parts connected the hinterlands and the ocean that surrounds them. Sound familiar Californians that spent winters in the mountains and summers on the shore?

Piled into our vans and caravanning along the edges of the Gold Coast, every lookout point, secret swimming pool, and bay of waves felt both amazingly new, and at home — like we belonged there.

Labor Day typically marks the end of summer — remember the old adage not to wear white after Labor Day? But in California, September feels like our hottest month all year. The SoCal shorelines are at the perfect balmy saltwater temperature for neoprene-free paddling and as the earth rotates around the sun into Fall, that sunset golden hour becomes even more magnificently sparkling.

There is no one size fits all for surfboards but some of the Bing longboards come pretty darn close. Read on to find out which magic Bing longboard model that three of the Seeababes swear by.

We’ve likened the surfboard/surfer connection to shopping for shoes, jeans swimsuits and even romantic relationships. You'll want a different board for different surf spots, moods, your surfing skill, style and that intangible feeling of what you simply like and don't like just because. The honest truth that shapers will tell you is: it’s not only about the surfboard, it’s about a winning combination of the surfboard, the surfer, and the wave.

There is no one size fits all. That being said, some of the Bing longboards come pretty darn close if you’re after a trimmy glide and nimble turns. What’s the magic longboard model that three of the Seeababes swear by?

We asked Mele Saili, Lola Mignot and Taylor Nelson (who are all Bing Surfboards team riders, too) which arrows they pull from the quiver for the smoothest noserides, and why.
Mele Saili wears the Capitola Top in Prarie, Rincon neoprene Jacket and Marina Pants. Photo by Nick LaVecchia for Without Walls.

Mele Saili
Go-To Longboard: 9'2 Bing Elevator for faster beach breaks or something with a steeper pocket.

Why do you love the 9'2" Bing Elevator longboard for your style?

Mele Saili: It has a little bit of tail kick making it a good turning board and step deck feature that allows more flex in the nose for faster trim when nose riding, making for a really good all around technical noserider. I like to be a smooth operator, and this board seems to move well with how my body moves.

How do you decide which longboard to ride on which day?

Mele Saili: Riding something with flatter rocker and a wider nose help with getting into waves on smaller slower days and allow for good support for walking the board when the waves are soft. But when the waves are more technical and steep I'll use a board with a little more rocker and a narrow nose to fit into the pocket of the wave better.

Let’s talk fins. Do you have a go-to fin? What is it and why?

Mele Saili: I usually go with a 9.5" Larry Allison Flex Fin. They have a nice base that taper out to a slender tip for good drive and responsive turning. Once in a while I'll put a pivot fin in there. It's a little more stiff when turning but it offers more hold and anchors the board down for longer nose rides.

Do you have another longboard that you go to when you want to switch it up?

Mele Saili: The Bing Cali Square Tail when I want something with more glide and trim.

Go-To Longboard:
 9’4” Bing Elevator

Lola Mignot wears the Zuma in Rose Petal with her Bing longboard. Photo by Luki O'Keefe.
Why do you love the 9'4" Bing Elevator longboard for your style?
Lola Mignot: It’s very responsive to any kind of wave or condition you choose to ride in. It was in stock and somebody had told me that it was the perfect board for me. They were right. The rails are very smooth. I can’t really say anything negative about this certain board. Everyone should own one.

What conditions is this board good for?

Lola Mignot: It performs best in hip high-sized waves.

Do you have another longboard that you go to when you want to switch it up and when do you pull it out?

Lola Mignot: My 9' Bing Pintail. I find it turns sharp and quick and also rides really well in bigger waves. It’s completely different to my Elevator.

Lola Mignot surfs her Bing longboard in the Zuma Surf Suit in Rose Petal. Photo by Luki O'Keefe.

Taylor Nelson
Go-To Longboard: The 9'2" Elevator is my favorite go-to log! It loves pockety conditions, beach breaks, and steep waves. It is perfect for The ‘Bu and Rincon.

Taylor Nelson wears the Zuma in Black Stripe. Photo by Alex Shea.
Why do you love the 9'2" Bing Elevator longboard for your style?

Taylor Nelson: The Elevator is my favorite board because it suits my type of down-the-line kind of fast surfing. Growing up at First Point Malibu, and calling it my home/favorite wave in the world, you need a lot of speed to make sections, and it’s a lot of drive down the line. It noserides like no other log for me because of the step deck and slight kick in the tail! Because I am on the petite side, this board’s small nose and thin width makes it a manageable for me to log and get into the pocket.

How do you decide which longboard to ride on which day?

Taylor Nelson: Most of the waves I surf I know before going out or checking which board is going to work better for the spot. I know my pockety waves between my mushy waves pretty well! But if I am surfing a new spot I always try to watch it for a while before going out.

Let’s talk fins. Do you have a go-to fin? What is it and why?

Taylor Nelson: I prefer a fin with a lot of rake and a little bit of flex.

Do you have another longboard that you go to when you want to switch it up?

Taylor Nelson: My backup longboard is the Mr. Rodgers Model. This board is my go-to board when it’s very small and when the waves are mushy. This board has a lot more volume then my Elevator so I also like to ride it when it is windy.

Made in collaboration with Australian filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, "Intimasea" is a short film that celebrates the beauty and grace of women's longboard surfing, and dreamy high of playing in the waves with your friends.

Featuring Seeababe ambassadors: Leah Dawson, Lola Mignot, Hallie Rohr, Karina Rozunko, Mele Saili and Makala Smith wearing the Seea 2015 collection, and filmed in Australia.

“Unfortunately, when I was a grom, there weren’t many girls and women in the water. I went through high school knowing only one girl who surfed with us,” said Nathan Oldfield in The Inertia. “Back then, lineups tended to be very macho affairs — very competitive, crowded with full-on sword fights. Nowadays, the tables have completely turned, especially where I live. I for one am completely stoked to share waves with lady sliders. They bring a unique and beautiful and gentler energy to surfing culture; it is a privilege and a pleasure and, above all, an inspiration to share time in the ocean with sea sisters.”

Being foreigners in roaming cell phone tower zones, connecting in real life with our Aussie family branches was a game of comment tag through Instagram posts and email chats on stolen Wi-Fi. Being on vacation, the passing days move slow and fast in the same instant. Punctuated by the shifting tides, wind, the next meal, the sun’s place in the sky — every moment is the best moment and then evaporates in a blink by the time a week is through.

Take a peek into the lazy days of the Seeababes during their last trip to Sayulita, Mexico for the MexiLogFest. From sunrise to sunset, we lounged around Lola Mignot’s home base, cooled off in the ocean, napped on the hot sand, and reveled in watching the sunset like it was our last night on vacay.

We may have come to Sayulita for the Mexi LogFest contest, but what we remember the most are the down days off — scrambling barefoot through the jungle, the salty hot wind as we zipped on a panga boat to find point breaks in the nooks and crannies of the vast Mexico coastline, and the waves. Oh, the perfect rights all to ourselves until the sun sank into the horizon.

Oh, the perfect rights all to ourselves until the sun sank into the horizon.

funtemplatesbabes rolled 10+ deep with friends to the Festival Sayulita in the Riviera Nayarit area of Mexico, held Jan 14-18, 2015. Rules stated: “Judging is based on traditional longboarding with heavy emphasis on style."

When we weren't roasting on the beach to cheer on our frends during the contest — Congrats to Seeababes Hallie Rohr and Mele Saili who placed third and fourth, respectively in the Women’s Division! — we filling up on glassy point break stoke. Hop on the panga boat with us the rhythm of dark water flowing into whitewash curls.
