She talks about her local surf heroes and her last big adventure.

When we asked Makala Smith where she’s headed for her next big adventure she replied, “Not quite sure yet!” A spitfire of high energy, good vibes and our favorite unpredictable wild card, that about sums up why we love how she rolls.

Makala grew up in Dana Point, California and spent her adolescent summers surfing from sunrise to sunset with her best friends and the beach community as her babysitters. Being in the same waters as local legends that shaped Southern California surf culture, it’s no wonder her classic footwork has been an influence on her own gliding style.

Beyond the sandy shores, cultivating a connection to Mother Nature’s seasons is a way of life: from tending to her home vegetable garden to being mindful of reducing her plastic consumption. We caught up with her to talk more about her signature suits, vintage clothing hoarding habits, and her most recent travels.

Your vintage clothing collection is the best. Why do you love searching and finding pieces?

It’s been something that I've been doing my whole life and I love it. Started early pre- teens when I didn't want to follow the trends and fads of that time. So the search went on to find that new cool unique thing. Every piece has a unique story to it and one-of-a-kind pieces are something so fun to come by. I've gotten to a point where I get them even if they don't fit me or they are men's wear, haha!

Searching for these garments is a really fun thing for me to do especially when I'm traveling. Just a hobby for now that I will eventually save for a business idea and/or my children one day.

How did your love for vintage swimsuits inspire your Seeababes suit? What was the process designing it with Amanda Chinchelli, designer of Seea?

I wanted to make something we haven't done before. Not just your average suit, but something unique and different that incorporates my personality and style. We did some research together, searched through some inspiration of vintage suits and just slowly brainstormed it and sketched it.

How did you want to perform and look when you wore it?

The initial idea was so that when you come down the flying down the line you have your hair blowing in the wind and your skirt flapping away. With the elastic waist, it’s comfortable and stays right on ya when you surf. Since the bottom is so unique I needed the top to be simple and secure.

It was an awesome feeling seeing it come from a piece of paper to a garment—a priceless feeling that I helped create that. Makes me want to design more epic suits.

Tell us more about your surfboard journey! How did you get into riding mid-length boards and why do you like them?

I love riding different boards. Having a variety of a quiver is ideal. Surfing Churches, my local winter spot, is where it all started. All it took was one wave. Then I got a friend Tyler Warren to shape me one. The feeling of going fast on a smaller board is a magical feeling. I've been barreled and that's the best feeling of surfing ever!

Growing up in Southern California, there’s always a chance of running into a local legend in the lineup. What did it feel like to meet one of your surf heros Joyce Hoffman?

I will never forget that day. It was a gloomy day with a lot on my mind I saw a wave out of the corner of my eye. I've lived in Dana Point my whole life and have never surfed that reef, mainly because it rarely breaks. So I pulled over and just ran out there for a couple and my day went from alright to one of the most memorable days ever. I surfed for a bit with some random dude on a SUP and he turned to me and was like do you know who that is paddling out?

I had no idea who it was at first. But it was her! Joyce! Ma Gurl!

She still has so much steeze in her style, riding a gun-like Hobie sitting all the way out. I was a bit star struck so I didn't have much to say, just hello. Her presence said it all.

She still lives on that beach in Dana Point in one of the coolest houses you will ever see. Her surfing means a lot to me especially because she grew up surfing the iconic waves at princess point killer Dana. Which I could never surf because I was born after the harbor was already built. She's my hero.

Tell us about your mom’s flower shop in Hamburg. How do you like working with your mom and greenery?

I've worked there since I can remember. I'm an excellent sweeper. Lol. It's amazing to being able to work and share that time with my mother. The older I get the better I get at it and the more I'm learning. There’s just always good energy at the flower shop. I love the designing portion of it as well.

We often are able to see things differently when we are traveling and it a totally new place… it gets us out of our routines. What’s the last surf trip that changed your outlook?

Wow this is a tough question. Any trip has eye-opening experiences.

Japan for Seea and Axxe wetsuits was super awesome and different! We stayed with Axxe for a week before we did a week shooting for Seea. What I loved about it so much is that we got to be tourists and explore all of what Japan has in store and all its greatest attractions, not just an average surf trip (which are never bad!)

My recent trip was just to Baja and that itself is a culture shock and a half. Being isolated with no one around but rolling green hills and the beautiful ocean with waves everywhere. Pulling up to the sand dunes after a long drive on a dirt road, sleeping in a tent in the sand, waking up and just cruising to find the best waves in the cove.

It's very important to travel with the people you can trust and love. It makes the whole trip. Just the family-like vibe at all times, it’s a great way to let go and open up your mind with that much space around you. You can go for a little walk and get away to read or whatever it may be. Made me realize how lucky we are to live in the places we do. But at the same time, I like the simple lifestyle that they have down there—living off the land and the ocean to provide for your restaurant or just your family.

Thanks, Makala!

Taylor Nelson and Makala Smith talk about their love/hate relationship with Malibu's famous First Point. One wave is all it takes.

There’s a magical Malibu that we see in photographs. It's a place where wave after wave unwinds in a flawless crescendo like rows of chorus line dancers. It’s a place where time feels like slow motion as your fin locks into the crest and you’re cruising on the tip of the nose for eternity.

This is the home of “Gidget.” Mecca of 1960s California surf culture. To Aussies and Brits, Malibu literally equals longboard, which are called "Mals" for short. Thousands of surfers flock to Malibu’s iconic pier in the summer hoping to catch a perfect ride.

And then there is a parallel universe of Malibu. A place where conflict is coming at all your senses. Paddling into a wave is a staredown looking over your left and right shoulders. Agro yelling and whistling escalates into people actually getting pushed off waves. You’re dodging leashless longboards and stray foamies.

Which Malibu have you been to? At the end of the summer and south swell season, we reminisced about our love/hate relationship with this famous wave. Turns out, which Malibu you end up at is in your head.

SUMMER LULLABY from Aaron Kim on Vimeo.

Taylor Nelson (Seeababe, goofy foot Malibu local)

"'Summer Lullaby' is a short piece that my good friend Aaron Kim came up with. We work really well together so when he asked to meet up for a dawn patrol at the BU I was stoked and even more stoked when it was the best day of summer and nobody was out!

So many people including myself have a love/hate relationship with the BU and I think the best way to navigate it on a crowded day is to fully embrace the madness and pick your waves carefully. I think so many people get upset when they paddle out because of the crowd because they don't know how to navigate around it and also they don't know the locals that they can't drop in on.

I always hear people say "It's Malibu" referring to the crowds and then they think that its ok for them to drop in on anyone and back paddle whoever just because it is so crowded. When you grow up in the chaos you know who has put their time in the water just as you have. So when people make those comments I find it pretty disrespectful and just ignore it because I know they are only coming up to surf with "swells".

My dad has always told me 'If you can't have fun out here, you can't have fun anywhere.' That little saying of his has totally changed the way I look at surfing and has always brought me back to how blessed we are to even have the ocean to jump into. I have gotten to a point that when people forget that surfing is supposed to be fun I feel really bad for them. If they can't find joy in the water it scares me to think what they are like on land.

Malibu feels like home because of the community of friends and family I have there. I love that no matter how long I am away from that place I am always welcomed back with warm smiles and open arms."

Makala Smith (Seeababe, SanO shredder and winner of the Women's 2016 Call to the Wall)

“Quality over quantity. When you get a good wave at Malibu it's one of the best waves of your life.

But you hate the attitude. The vibe isn't how it’s supposed to be with surfing. Surfing is supposed to be alive sharing the stoke together. Sometimes when you’re there it's too much to handle. It's not what you want in the water.

Amongst the crowds and the kooks, there are a bunch of legends in the water that understand and share the stoke.

Even though you don't get the waves you want, the ones you get are perfection. Not only is it worth the wait, time and presence are nonexistent. It doesn't matter where you are in the world, a good wave in Malibu is like a good wave anywhere in the world.

The feeling of coming off a perfect wave at Malibu is like no other. You just got the perfect right of your life and the crowd is not a factor. Even though you’re in a crowd, you’re on the wave alone and that all worth it.

One wave is all it takes.

You can wait 30 minutes for a wave and deal with people back paddling you and cutting you off, but that moment when you get one… It's worth it all.

One wave, you can get out and leave satisfied. Or not, then you want more and you don't get it! Hahahaha.”

Gather together three generations of the best surfers from around the world on one beach, and you’re guaranteed to have rare memories that stay with you forever. Only during the Noosa Festival of Surfing can you exit the bus from the airport, totally jet lagged and lost, and then find your friends by following the sounds of waves.

Only in Noosa can you surf under the night sky, and not be alone. “I would never do it at home but always seem to do it at Noosa. It just feels safe,” says Australian Seeababe Kirra Innes who lives in Yamba.

On her first trip to Australia, Seea’s resident photographer Luki O’Keefe shared how the locals made her feel welcome during her first days in Noosa.

Congrats to Seeababes Karina Rozunko for placing first in the Women’s Open and Makala Smith for placing second at the Noosa Festival of Surfing!

“The waves are the #1 best thing about Noosa the 2nd best is the community that the waves bring together.

I hopped off the plane and on to a bus that dropped me off somewhere in the middle of Noosa. I hadn't been able to connect with anyone so I just asked someone where the beach was, like the totally lost tourist I was. I walked for quite a while in clothes that were not made for the overwhelmingly hot weather, carrying a suitcase and two backpacks across town until I heard the waves crash.

I followed the sound down a trail in the woods and found Karina who led me to the van that I now call home. Over the next few days I connected with friends I hadn't seen since their visit last summer and I met heaps of new friends that offered me a home, a board, and some waves. I'm on the other side of the world but the community feels identical to the SanO surf tribe I grew up with.” -- Luki O'Keefe.

Inside Makala Smith's van. Photo by Nick LaVecchia.  Living and traveling out of a van might be trending thanks to #vanlife hashtags on Instagram but surfers have been the poster children to the simple living of these mini mobile homes since the 1960s.

Why? Sure, we can cram all our worldly possessions in a backpack (swimsuits, sunscreen, some clothes) for most open-ended, warm water adventures, but how else are we going to haul our friends, and our 9-foot plus logs around? Enter the spacious interiors and ample roofs of vans that surfers outfit to be as much an expression of style as practicality.

We tagged along with Seeababe Makala Smith and her van, "Vanessa" to get a look inside.  Here, she dishes her tips for smooth spot checks on the road.

Van Provisions Checklist:

"Well my van is pretty much always ready for more than a day adventure, wardrobe included. Ice chest, propane stove (don’t forget the propane), umbrella for the beach or the back of the van, windshield heat reflectors are great for just the day so the van isn’t cooking, and great for camping so no creepers can peek in. Solar panel lanterns that I was fortunate enough to receive a couple from Thalia Surf via Vans promo gift with purchase and they are the coolest things ever with a hand crank on the bottom. Beach chairs, ukelele, plenty of dry food snacks, and WATER."

Pantry Do's and Don'ts:

"Storing food is easy. Just have to eat it fast and plan ahead. Have to be careful with produce that goes bad — you don't want a smelly van.

Dry food, soups, coffee/tea, rice, beans, canned food, almond milk, cereal are easy. Ice chest and plastic storage bins are perfect cause you don’t want ants!"

What’s the best place to park your van?

"Best place to park it would be near the beach on a friendly looking street/ neighborhood if you don't have a campsite. No alleys, sketchy parking lots.

That's why it's always good to be friendly and make lots of friends from all up and down the coast! Who knows you could park in front of there house and they so happen to live a mile from Malibu?"

Don't worry, Makala knows exactly where everything is. Photo by Nick LaVecchia.

What do you need to know about sleeping and camping out of your van?

"There are weird people everywhere you go! LOCK YOUR VAN.

Example: Seeababe Lola and I were camping in the Malibu lot for the Call to the Wall comp a couple months back... keep in mind its 5:00AM. We wake up to this horrifically piercing consistent knock on the back door of the van. We both ignored it for a solid 20 minutes, it paused then of course it started again. We both were like, “Who the flux is that? Maybe it’s the boys telling us the waves are pumping. So finally we get up and respond... WHAAAAAT. So 'it' just opens the back of the van.

'Oh hi oh my gosh oh I’m so sorry I thought you were my friend. My friend has a van just like yours with surfboards on it as well.'

Sigh... Are you kidding me? Everyone camping here in the parking lot has a van and surfboards. Why us? Hahaha, so we finally try to go back to bed and she comes back rambling like before 'Oh my goshhh I’m so sorry do you girls want a frozen water? A hard boiled egg? Champagne?'

We just said yes to shut her up, locked the back door, and woke up three hours later with all this crap on the feet of our bed. Lola looks at me, 'Oh shit I thought that was a dream this morning.' LOL"

Where are most fun places you have you taken your van?

"Santa Cruz and San Fran. Trips for the coalition at Steamer Lane camping on the bluff!

Joshua Tree, and just local to Blue Jay, I do all the time!"

What makes a good surfmobile?

"Surfboard storage inside and up top. Comfy bed, so you can get up and surf in the morning without a sore back. Plenty of water, good drinking water, and shower water now because of the drought, there's a lack of beaches with showers. Toiletries.

It has to be fun to hang in during the day to get out of the sun!"

Close-up of her Seea suits clothesline. Photo by Nick LaVecchia.

How did you customize your van to make it into a full-fledged surfmobile?

"Well a lot of people I know with vans have built wood frames for the bed so its off the floor, with awesome storage underneath. Its awesome, not that hard, and the best way to do it.

The thing with my van is it has all the seats and I still like to be somewhat legal when driving people around — especially for road trips with more than one passenger. So I use either wooden pallets or plastic crates. Its like a puzzle figuring out how to lay them out, but can be removed and easy to throw a row of seats in if I need to.

Fake grass is a good alternative to carpet because you know us surfers with wet stuff, it doesn’t mold and super easy to clean just shake it out."

Why do you love traveling in your van?

"It’s like a house on wheels! You don’t need much more than that! Traveling with more than three people is rough in a van. I recommend just two max unless you have a tent also.

I like taking my own van places because you got all your swag, your own bed, you’re not taking over anyone else’s space. It’s your own hotel room."

Number of times Makala's van has failed:

"Zero. Vanessa is a reliable friend."

Nature is bigger than us. You can’t not feel butterflies looking down from this peak. It’s scary! And euphoric! On the map, the Hawaiian islands are nothing but dots in the great open ocean. But walking on the red volcanic soil, on the silky sand, submerged under the waterline, everything feel grand and alive. It snaps us into the present beauty of this panoramic view.

Made in collaboration with Australian filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, "Intimasea" is a short film that celebrates the beauty and grace of women's longboard surfing, and dreamy high of playing in the waves with your friends.

Featuring Seeababe ambassadors: Leah Dawson, Lola Mignot, Hallie Rohr, Karina Rozunko, Mele Saili and Makala Smith wearing the Seea 2015 collection, and filmed in Australia.

“Unfortunately, when I was a grom, there weren’t many girls and women in the water. I went through high school knowing only one girl who surfed with us,” said Nathan Oldfield in The Inertia. “Back then, lineups tended to be very macho affairs — very competitive, crowded with full-on sword fights. Nowadays, the tables have completely turned, especially where I live. I for one am completely stoked to share waves with lady sliders. They bring a unique and beautiful and gentler energy to surfing culture; it is a privilege and a pleasure and, above all, an inspiration to share time in the ocean with sea sisters.”

The annual Noosa Festival of Surfing feels like the best global reunion. Every year, we are grateful for the spiderweb of Aussie connections that grows wider and happier with each visit. Starting at the Sydney airport, we pile into a caravan of surf mobiles, camp and surf along the way to the eastern coastline for the festival.

This year, we are so proud of the Seeababes that swept the women's events! Congratulations to Karina Rozunko who placed first in the Maui Jim Sunglasses Women's Pro and second in the Goddess Women's Open, Mele Saili who placed first in the Goddess Women's Open and Lola Mignot who placed second in LED Design Junior Women.

Welcome Makala Smith to the Seeababes family! Photo by Luki O'Keefe.
If only we could bottle Makala Smith’s particular flavor of stoke and gain a zap of her electric superpowers. Whether it’s charging bombs at the Point at SanO, trimming in little ankle biters, or wiping out with panache, her carefree attitude can uplift and unwind the most uptight of personalities.

She’s our favorite wild card that will drop everything to go on a last minute surf safari — like that time she went with us across the boarder to chase swell, and then again this year she bought a ticket and was paddling out with us in Sayulita, Mexico within 24 hours.

A fellow retro style junkie, Makala used to wear vintage swimsuits in the water — despite the non-stretch fabrics with too-big bullet bras and too-tiny waists. That’s dedication. Thankfully she doesn’t sacrifice comfort any longer and you’ll most often see her in the Seea Riviera one-piece and leggings.

Bombs away. Photo of Makala Smith by Luki O'Keefe.

Growing up in a creative surf family in Dana Point, California, Makala has played in the waves with the local dudes (her dad being her main influence) for as long as she could remember. “Hallie Rohr and I would get dropped off at the jetty with the boys around 7AM and wouldn't get picked up till 7PM,” Makala says about her summer vacation routine.

In honor of Makala Smith joining the Seeababes family, we caught up with her to get the scoop on her latest "spontaneous combustion" travels.

You went to Australia for the Byron Bay Surf Festival last year! Where else did you go in Oz?

I was mainly in Sydney area traveling anywhere from five hours south of Sydney or eight hours north this trip! For sure got to know a lot of good towns and better than just driving through it. All of the Northern beaches of Sydney are the most beautiful places! When we went earlier last year with all the Seeababes, we road tripped to Noosa. We saw all of the coast — was amazing!

What did you love about the culture in Australia?

The culture over there is way different. I loved the underdeveloped land once you leave Sydney. The coastline isn't straight like ours with every bluff over the ocean with a house on it. It's jagged and empty along the way. The people are different everywhere you go. It's very spread out. In most beach communities there's surf culture, but they’re all different.

People still go to the beach and enjoy it, but there's nothing like south Orange County beach culture. It's a lifestyle here and it's not just my friends that live it. So many people all over California live that lifestyle. Beach hangs in Cali are the ultimate.

What are your favorite local spots to surf in California and why?

SanO ‘cause of the surf culture. It could be a terrible day for the beach and we will be having an awesome day — just always surrounded by good people.

What do you like about surfing with girls?

Surfing with the girls is the best. We get the best party waves. We are always laughing and being obnoxious. We have the best time just messing around! Same with the guys though, not much difference, I learn from my peers and surfing with all them is what makes us grow in surfing!

Who do you look up to in surfing?

Lisa Anderson was my favorite surfer growing up and still is. Belinda Baggs and her grace in surfing has influenced me and my style a lot.

Makala in Mexico last year, wearing the Chicama bikini. Photo by Luki O'Keefe.

What do you usually bring with you on any surf trip?

Must bring on a surf trip: water water water! A bikini a wetsuit jacket (depends where you go), sunscreen is a must, a good lunch or snack and a towel that's all you need really! In the van [at home] I always have a couple quivers: a short board, a log and my old mal, all my Seea gear — it's always the hardest to pick what to wear! —wetsuits, water and snacks.

What’s your surf travel style?

With [going to Mexico with Luki O'Keefe last year] it was totally last minute, go with the flow. I love doing that! Most surf trips are like that. Spontaneous combustion is what we like to call it.

Even Noosa [last year], we planned the flight but when we got there we had no idea what we were doing other than road trip. Like, no idea where we were going at all! Five girls with guys we barely know, just went for it and had the best time ever! It's good to plan ahead in certain areas but you never know where your trip is going to take you! That's why it's an adventure.

You booked your ticket super last minute to meet up with the rest of the Seeababes in Sayulita. What made you change your mind?

It worked out perfectly. I got to work the five days I was scheduled — the previous week when the girls were there. I was so jealous when I was dropping them off at the airport. But I just told myself, “focus on Noosa [Festival in March] you need to save your money.” I did finally got over the jealousy. Well kinda...” Then the girls called me saying, “Come on! It's not the same with out you. We have all the Seeababes but you! We need the final piece to our trip, we need you dude. Get your butt here now! At first I was like, “No way dude I gotta work! But ohhkaaaay I'll check it out…"

Tickets were only $350 round trip And I was like, “Done! Sold! I am coming!” I bought it while I was at work and left the following morning at 6AM so my good friend Andy Neiblas took me to LAX [Los Angeles International] airport at 4 AM. I arrived in PVR [Puerto Vallarta, Mexico] at 1PM. So stoked! Best last minute trip! Everything happens for a reason.

Was it worth it? What were your best memories of that trip?

Something I'll never forget from Sayulita is the vibe and the spiritual side of it all. There's so much history of that town and you can feel it through the people. The energy that everyone holds is so strong and it’s brought out in people whether it's good or bad. For me, it made me open my head and I love not having a phone, just taking morning strolls along the beach and meeting so many beautiful souls that touched me along the way. Just exploring is so amazing whether there's surfing involved or not.

One of my favorite days with all the girls was the day we walked from Lola Mignot’s house around to this beach and body surfed. The walk was so unreal, so beautifully breathtaking you can hear the birds and the bugs squishing in your toes. I could open a little vintage boutique and never come back!

Thanks Makala and welcome to the Seeababes family, we are so stoked to have you!
